Certifications to Look for When Buying Stone Internationally

Why Certifications Matter in Stone Trade

In the stone trade, certifications serve three distinct purposes: they verify performance characteristics (CE, ASTM), they verify identity and origin (quarry certificates, COOs), and they verify ethical and environmental standards (fair trade, environmental product declarations). Knowing which certification addresses which concern helps you ask for exactly what you need.

CE Marking (European Market)

CE marking is mandatory for natural stone sold for construction use in the European Economic Area (EEA). It indicates the product has been tested and declared conformant with the relevant European harmonised standard (typically EN 12058 for marble and limestone tiles; EN 12059 for other stone products).

CE marking requires: initial type testing at an accredited laboratory, a Declaration of Performance (DoP) from the manufacturer, and factory production control (FPC). For any stone project in Europe, insist on CE-marked product. Non-CE stone cannot legally be placed on the EU market for construction use.

ASTM Standards (US Market)

In the United States, ASTM International standards govern stone performance requirements. Key standards: ASTM C503 (marble), ASTM C615 (granite), ASTM C568 (limestone), ASTM C629 (slate). These specify minimum performance thresholds for properties like absorption, modulus of rupture, and compressive strength.

ISO 9001: Quality Management Systems

ISO 9001 certification indicates a supplier has implemented a documented quality management system — covering everything from raw material procurement to production control, inspection, and corrective action. It's not a product quality certification per se, but it signals that a supplier has systematic quality processes. For large commercial projects, it's a reasonable minimum expectation.

Environmental Product Declarations (EPDs)

EPDs, conforming to ISO 14040/14044 and EN 15804, quantify a product's environmental impact across its lifecycle. They are required or encouraged by LEED v4, BREEAM, and Green Star rating systems. Italian stone producers are among the most advanced in EPD publication; ask European suppliers first.

Fair Trade and Ethical Sourcing

Child labour in Indian quarries is a documented historical issue. Several certification bodies address this: the Fair Stone Standard (Germany), the Ethical Stone Register (UK), and audits by organisations like FLOCERT. For projects with ESG reporting requirements, ask your supplier about third-party social audits and worker welfare documentation.
