Natural Stone Price Guide — What Affects Cost Per Square Foot?

The Variables That Drive Stone Pricing
Natural stone pricing is driven by a set of identifiable factors. As a broad orientation:
- Budget sandstone / limestone: $8–20/sqft (ex-works)
- Standard granite: $20–45/sqft
- Entry-level Italian/Turkish marble: $35–65/sqft
- Premium Calacatta / Statuario: $100–300/sqft
- Rare onyx / bookmatched premium marble: $300–1000+/sqft
1. Stone Type and Rarity
Common granites (Black Galaxy, Absolute Black) are quarried in high volumes and priced accordingly. Rare marble varieties (Paonazzo, Arabescato, Calacatta Borghini) come from limited quarry faces and command significant premiums.
2. Surface Finish
Polished is typically the baseline price. Brushed/leathered, flamed, and bush-hammered finishes usually add $3–8/sqft to the price.
3. Thickness
20mm is the standard. 30mm costs 30–50% more. Custom thicknesses above 30mm are significantly more expensive.
4. Format and Cut
Raw slabs are the cheapest format. Calibrated tiles add processing cost. Bespoke cut-to-size pieces add significant fabrication cost (typically $15–40/sqm for the cutting service).
5. Origin and Shipping
For Indian stone shipped to Europe, add approximately $25–40/sqm for a full container shipment (freight, customs, delivery).
