Overview

What it is

Cutting, grinding and polishing stone releases respirable crystalline silica, a cause of silicosis, lung cancer and kidney disease. Silica content varies: engineered quartz is above 90%, sandstone and quartzite can be similar, granite is often 20 to 45%, while marble and limestone are usually low.

Effective protection is layered: wet cutting and on-tool water first, then local exhaust extraction and HEPA vacuums, with respirators as the last line of defence. Add hearing, eye, cut and foot protection.
