Overview

What it is

Façade stone needs mechanical support, not just adhesive. Anchors, including stainless pins and dowels, kerf (slot) clips, undercut anchors and rail sub-frames, transfer each panel's weight and wind load to the structure while allowing for movement.

In ventilated façades, stainless steel or aluminium sub-frames carry the panels with an air gap behind. Anchor design is engineering work, based on the stone's tested strength at the anchor point.

Types
Dowels and pins, kerf clips, undercut anchors, rails
Materials
Stainless A2/A4 (304/316), aluminium sub-frames
Design
Dead load, wind load, seismic where required
Standards
EN 1469 (cladding), ASTM C1242 (attachment)

Applications

Best used for

  • Ventilated and rainscreen façadesPanels on sub-frames.
  • High-rise claddingEngineered for wind and movement.
  • Heavy interior claddingLobbies and atriums.
  • Soffits and overhead stoneWhere failure isn't an option.

Timing

Best time of year to buy

Consumables are bought all year, so timing is about stock: order ahead of the Lunar New Year shutdown in China and the August break in Italy, and buy trial quantities at the spring and autumn fairs.

  • Chinese toolmakers close for Lunar New Year; place large orders by early December.
  • Italian and Spanish makers slow in August.
  • Hold four to eight weeks of stock of your fastest-moving tools to ride out shipping delays.

  • US: steel and aluminium anchors and rails are likely to fall under Section 232 (up to 50% on metal articles). It is often the biggest duty on a façade package; check the current list.

Before you order

Buying checklist

  1. 1Anchors must be engineered: ask for calculations from a façade engineer.
  2. 2Specify A4 (316) stainless near coasts and pools.
  3. 3Test anchor strength in the actual stone (EN 13364 or equivalent).
  4. 4Isolate dissimilar metals to prevent galvanic corrosion.
  5. 5Anchored façades typically use 30 mm or thicker stone; confirm with your engineer.

Price level: A small share of façade cost, but the part you can't compromise on.
