Overview

What it is

Drilling is the first step of almost every quarry operation: holes thread the diamond wire, guide splitting, or line up for controlled blasting. Dimension-stone quarries use pneumatic line drills, which drill many parallel holes in a row, and down-the-hole (DTH) rigs for long vertical and horizontal holes.

Accuracy matters more than speed. A hole that wanders means the wire can't be threaded or the block splits out of square.

Stage

Types
Line drill, DTH rig, hydraulic top-hammer
Hole size
About 30 to 40 mm (splitting) up to 90 mm (wire threading)
Power
Compressed air or hydraulics
Pairs with
Wire saw, splitters, hydro-bags

Applications

Best used for

  • Threading holes for wire sawsTwo intersecting holes set up each cut.
  • Line drillingRows of holes for splitting blocks cleanly.
  • Squaring and splittingWith wedges, hydro-bags or expansive agents.
  • Controlled blastingWhere permitted, in overburden and waste rock.

Timing

Best time of year to buy

Buy around the big fairs: Xiamen and Marmomac Brazil in March, Coverings in April and Marmomac Verona in late September. Makers launch models and offer show pricing.

Best time to buy Normal Slower or pricier
  • Italian makers close for about three weeks in August; orders placed in July often slip to September.
  • Chinese makers close for Lunar New Year; order by early December for spring delivery.
  • Large lines are built to order: expect three to nine months from deposit to commissioning.
  • Plan installation for your own slow season so the changeover doesn't cost production.

Import costs

Tariffs and import duties

Base duties for the main import markets, the extra US surcharge by origin, and the trade remedies to check before you quote a landed price.

Base import duty (MFN)

  • United StatesFree to 5% baseRigs are MFN free but often carry significant origin-based surcharges. Drill bits are 2.9% to 5% plus applicable surcharges.
  • European Union0% to 2.7%Rigs duty-free; bits 2.7%.

  • Steel-heavy equipment can fall under US Section 232 derivative tariffs; if it does, the 2026 Section 301 surcharge does not apply. Check the current derivatives list.
  • US imports from many countries now carry a 2026 Section 301 origin surcharge. Check origin-specific rates before quoting.
  • China-origin goods are subject to an additional 12.5% forced-labor tariff (Section 301) on top of the 25% legacy China Section 301 duty.

Rates checked October 2026. Indicative rates for planning, not a customs ruling. Duties depend on the exact tariff line, origin, trade agreements and the rules in force on the day of entry. Confirm with a licensed customs broker before you price an order.

Before you order

Buying checklist

  1. 1Check the drilling accuracy (deviation) specification.
  2. 2Match air consumption to your compressor capacity.
  3. 3Check carriage and rail length for line drilling.
  4. 4Confirm local availability of bits and hammers.
  5. 5Insist on dust suppression or extraction.

Price level: Line drills are affordable; large DTH rigs are a major investment.
