A quarry wire saw drives a closed loop of diamond wire around a flywheel. The wire is threaded through two intersecting drill holes in the rock, and as the machine travels back along its rail it tensions the wire and pulls it through the stone, making clean, straight cuts many metres long.
It replaced explosives and the old helical sand-wire in most dimension-stone quarries because it wastes less stone and leaves sound, fracture-free blocks. Power, flywheel diameter and wire speed are matched to the stone, from lighter units for marble to high-power machines for hard granite.
