Silica Dust Compliance Is Tightening Worldwide — A Practical Checklist for Fabricators

The direction of travel is one-way
Every major regulator has moved the same direction on respirable crystalline silica over the last decade: lower exposure limits, stronger enforcement, and mandatory health surveillance for exposed workers. The United States enforces a permissible exposure limit for respirable crystalline silica set by OSHA's 2016 standard, with dedicated enforcement emphasis on stone fabrication. The UK's HSE has run repeated inspection campaigns on stoneworking. Australia went furthest with its engineered stone prohibition. None of this is reversing.
Natural stone fabricators are in scope
Granite, quartzite and sandstone all carry meaningful crystalline silica content. Cutting, edging and polishing them dry generates respirable dust in the hazardous size fraction. If your workshop processes any of these, the regulations apply to you regardless of what happened to engineered stone in your market.
The practical checklist
Engineering controls first
- Wet cutting and wet polishing as standard. Water suppression at the point of cut is the single highest-impact control available.
- Local exhaust ventilation on any tool that cannot run wet — hand grinders especially.
- No dry sweeping, ever. Dry sweeping resuspends settled dust into the breathing zone. Use wet methods or an appropriately filtered vacuum.
- Separate and enclose high-dust operations from the rest of the workshop.
Then respiratory protection
RPE is the last line, not the first. Where it is needed, it must be the correct protection factor for the measured exposure, and it must be fit tested to the individual wearer. A loose mask on a bearded face provides a fraction of its rated protection.
Then monitoring and records
- Air monitoring against your jurisdiction's exposure limit, repeated when processes change
- Health surveillance — typically including respiratory questionnaires and periodic imaging where required
- Documented training records for every operative
- Maintenance records for extraction and water-suppression equipment
Why this is becoming a commercial issue, not just a legal one
Main contractors on large projects increasingly include health-and-safety questionnaires in prequalification, and silica control is now a standard line item. Fabricators who can produce monitoring data and training records win work that fabricators who cannot are quietly excluded from. If you are a buyer, asking the question is free and tells you a great deal about how a shop is run.
