Overview

What it is

Laboratory tests turn a stone's looks into engineering data: density, water absorption, compressive and flexural strength, abrasion resistance, frost resistance, slip resistance and anchor strength. Architects and façade engineers need them to specify stone.

In Europe, CE marking requires declared performance under harmonised standards such as EN 1469 (cladding), EN 12057 (modular tiles), EN 12058 (floor and stair slabs) and EN 1341 (external paving). A petrographic examination identifies what the stone really is.
